These aren't adverbs. They are prepositions. See the "Cambridge Grammar of the English Language" (CGEL) for explanation and argument for why the traditional classification is entirely without merit. Plus, there is some relatively detailed discussion in CGEL of the meanings of prepositions, with pointers to the by-now pretty vast literature on this topic. Relevant to this discussion is the "Cognitive Grammar" tradition associated with George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, on the bodily basis of meaning and thought; prepositions figure very prominently in this tradition.
