It is becoming increasingly clear -- to those willing to look -- that the resurgent McCain-Palin ticket will offer the country an Administration that promises to be potentially worse than the one we currently have, a prospect I would've thought impossible before this campaign season hit its latest stride.
Here are two voices from today's NYTimes that hammer this point home very clearly. First, Thomas Friedman:
... Now the same guy, who would not sell his soul to win his party’s nomination, is ready to sell every piece of his soul to win the presidency.
In order to disguise the fact that the core of his campaign is to continue the same Bush policies that have led 80 percent of the country to conclude we’re on the wrong track, McCain has decided to play the culture-war card. Obama may be a bit professorial, but at least he is trying to unite the country to face the real issues rather than divide us over cultural differences.
Even scarier is today's opinion piece by Frank Rich, who underscores the fact that, however prepared Sarah Palin is to lead, those who advanced her candidacy for the Vice Presidency -- and are now penning the script to which she hews with all of the professionalism of the local tv sportscaster she once was -- have found just the candidate they were looking for, one that they are willing to advance even at the cost of even the slightest pretense of integrity:
Of course, there is a huge difference between winning over the Opinion Page of the NYTimes and winning over a majority of the electorate in enough states to win the Electoral College. Indeed, that's precisely what I'm afraid of.
It's so nice to have you do all of the research for us. It makes our decision making so much easier!! Thanks.
